MILIA

(MI-LEE-UH)

WHAT IS MILIA?

Milia is a collection of “milium cyst” or white bumps that appear in groups and often emerge on the cheeks and nose.

Milia are smaller, dome-shaped bumps that have a white or yellow coloration. While they are not normally itchy or painful they can become irritated by rubbing against something like sheets or clothing.

In an instance where the cysts persist and recurring outbreaks continue to occur on your skin, Milia Removal may be required.

In addition, Milia cysts are routinely found on your face, lips, eyelids, and cheeks. They can also be found across the body including the genitals.

WHAT CAUSES MILIA?

Milia occurs when Keratin (keratin is the type of protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails.) becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. It can be caused by the occlusion of hair follicles.

If you do find Milia on your face, it is important to not pick, scratch, poke, or attempt to remove them as this may cause bleeding, scabbing, scaring, or even infection to the area.

Keep your skin moisturized and clean. It’s important to not strip the skin of its natural oils as these will keep it balanced and healthy.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY MILIA?

Milia can occur in people of all ages and ethnicities. However, this condition is most common in newborn babies and is often referred to as “baby acne”. While Milia is more common in infants, Milia Removal is more common in adults.
